Trying to Focus…

Filed under: Behavior, Life, People — cynicalsynapse @ 8:17 pm

What’s the point of this blog, you might be wondering. Good question, and that’s why I’m trying to focus.

I started this blog primarily as a means to rant about what I thought was wrong with the world. And I hoped others felt the same as I did. That’s the rationale behind the name, Cynical Synapse. I’m a cynic trying to connect with other cynics. Better than two months later, however, the site’s just exceeded a hundred visitors. Not much of a connection, huh?

So, why aren’t my fellow cynics just pounding down the virtual doors to this blog? This question caused me to do a little research and I’ve come to a couple of conclusions:

1. I need to be more professional with my writing style. It may seem okay, but it’s been just off the top of my head. I’ve discovered the blogosphere expects more.

2. Posts need an obvious point. This goes back to writing style to some degree. Even a post that’s just intended to be whining needs to clearly have that objective.

3. Solutions draw people; problems don’t. Anybody can complain and people might agree with the complaint, but so what? We’ve all got our pet peeves. However pointing out an issue and suggesting some ways to address it…well, I guess that’s what I’ll call “positive cynicism.” Gee, that’s not an oxymoron, is it?

How to Get There

Now, I don’t really want to give up my original intent, which was to whine and commiserate with like-minded cynics out there. So, I think I need to work on blogging in two primary spheres: things that aren’t right with ways to improve them and things that make you laugh because they’re so obviously not right. See? The power of positive cynicism!

I think the difference between Harass Customers—a complaint, plain and simple—and Decline the Receipt Snatchers—identifying an issue and presenting options—exemplifies the direction the blog needs to go in. What do you think? Look for the humorous post shortly.
